Cassandra Barnett ; Exercise 4 Political Art.

Exercise 4 political art.

Street and political Art have had a great impact in my life. First of all, I am going to give a brief background of where I am from. I was born in Colombia, Colombia is a country in South America and as well as most South American countries it has political issues.

Raised in Colombia by a middle class family I was always taught that education and hard work were the key to success, however in my country, many people don’t think the same. Some people think vandalism is a form of art and therefore many people decide to paint graffiti in public buildings or paint over  monuments.

As I grew up I realised that ideas are relative, and every one have their own ideas. These ideas however are not easy to be dealt with because those ideas who benefit ones affect others. However, in a few places in the world people has learnt to come to agreements. Unfortunately in my country come to agreements is quite difficult making progress difficult, to the point that some nationals  leave the country trying to find better opportunities.

As I travel around the world I noticed something very peculiar. My country is not the only one. However some countries are a quite more understanding when it comes to ideas. Australia  for example has spaces and galleries for their people to express their art and ideas. Some Asian countries are quite stricter and van such demonstrations.

South America is home to many important artists, Some of them like Fernando Botero and Freda Calho who Portrait south American lifestyle, and also they address some of the social issues. One of most significant pieces of art in South America is the famous face of the Che Guevara. And It says Hasta la victoria siempre. It means, to the victory forever. This stencil is so important that it is been painted on the hall of one of the most important universities of Bogota, Capital city of Colombia. Every body knows it as plaza del Che.

For South American people, this is very significant because it remind us that we have to be free.

Art for me is everything; I think we are all pieces of art, I think every grain of sand is an art piece, I also think that art is expression and we all can communicate through art. However i like to live in clean and organised places. In my opinion the walls of the city are not made to be painted with rage and hatred, having said that I will still say that people needs to come to agreements instead of arguments. To end up I will quote "The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins. “Expressed by the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

  1. Yes you have given a voice to your community, and have a targeted audience by referring it back to your own country and up bringing.
I like the way you have used the picture of Che Guevara as an example of the technique you would use to communicate your message.
And the words you have used as your statement, I thought in your own language was a nice touch.
The subject you used is something new to me and I found trouble relating to it, although i did learn from it.
I do agree that education is the key to success and would like to say nice work fabian.
